Succession Stories: Lessons Learned from Former Family Office CEOs

Jane Flanagan, Director of Family Office Advisory, Northern Trust / Global Family & Private Investment Offices

While succession is a normal healthy part of every family’s evolution, few family offices have written succession plans.  Why is this?  Many avoid the topic because change is scary, and the idea of life without their trusted family office leader is difficult to imagine.

With so many families facing leadership transitions – in their families, businesses, and family offices – Northern Trust’s Global Family Office Practice set out to demystify this process by interviewing 32 former family office CEOs to collect their “succession stories.”

This conversation with Jane will include the highlights of Northern Trust’s research with over 100 families.

Combine a Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approach to Strategic Planning and Cash Flow Management

Jeff Coyle, Founder & CEO, Libretto

While a family’s mission and strategy are typically applied from the top down, the success of the plan ultimately depends on the households and individuals comprising each generation.  Can we improve family outcomes by refining the strategy from the bottom up?  Yes – strategic planning at the household level can identify cash flow requirements before they occur, enabling the family office to proactively adjust investments and liquidity to accommodate each household’s unique needs.

In this session, Jeff Coyle, founder of Libretto and former advisor with 25+ years of experience managing UHNW clients, will present a framework for engaging each household in a strategy process that connects their needs back to the family enterprise.  This process enables the family office to address the needs of each generation while managing the complex liquidity and cash flow requirements of the family enterprise.
