Building Life-Enhancing Relationships with Beneficiaries in the Quantum Age: A Trustee’s Guide to Funding “Good”
Perhaps the most important factor in wealth transfer is not trust language, fiduciary income tax planning, investment alpha, or prudent distribution committees—but the ability of the trustee to carry-out the intended “good”. In this presentation, Raymond “Ray” C. Odom JD CFP, attorney and former trust administrator, will advocate for a quantum leap in trustee decision-making by focusing on the word “beneficiary”. Looking through the lens of “bene-volence”, the medieval roots of trust law, positive psychology research and three metaphors from quantum mechanics he will:
- Tell how to identify, define, and measure “good” trust management.
- Provide compelling reasons to evolve fiduciary focus from preventing dissipation to funding life-metamorphosis.
- Reshape feudal notions of trustee “castle protection” into quantum notions of “observational impact.”

Trustee–Beneficiary Dynamics: What to Do When It Gets Personal
The trustee–beneficiary relationship is the heartbeat of effective trust stewardship — but it’s often tested by personal requests, emotional moments, and unexpected life events. In this session, we’ll explore how trustees and beneficiaries can build trust, maintain transparency, and navigate real-life situations that challenge neutrality and judgment. Through case studies — including the high-stakes prenuptial agreement request — we’ll examine how to balance duty with empathy, avoid conflicts of interest, and protect the trust’s integrity while preserving family relationships.

Selecting the Right Trustee and Role of Trust Protectors within the Trust World*
One of the most important decisions the grantor of a trust will make is picking the person or institution that will be in-charge of managing the trust’s assets and executing the fiduciary duties it requires. Building on the prior sessions, Jason Kohout and Stephanie Derks will review various trustee options, note the pros and cons of each option, and identify how to select the most qualified trustee for your family’s circumstances.

Managing Fiduciary Risks
Discussion of “fiduciary risk” has traditionally focused almost exclusively on a trustee’s risk of being sued. However, this is only one of the adverse outcomes in a trust relationship to consider when approaching risk management. We will look at several areas in which the trust relationship might fail, some of which might lead to stakeholder conflict. We will also review best practices to manage and hopefully avoid those risks.
