Generational Transitions | Family Learning Roadmaps | Creating a Lasting Enterprise Family

“The best place to learn about issues facing wealthy families and family offices.” – Previous Family Forum attendee

At the 2024 FOX Family Forum, family members, office executives, and their trusted advisors will learn about building and strengthening a lasting family enterprise and discover the importance of family learning, investment in individual strengths, and creation of meaningful, memorable experiences for their family.

We’ll explore navigating the artificial intelligence frontier with expert Dave Blundin, hear about ten core competencies across each of life’s ten stages from the authors of The 10x10 Learning Roadmap: Advancing Flourishing in Families of Wealth, and delve into Design for Strengths with Olympic medalist, acclaimed author, and motivational speaker, John Coyle. This forum is a must for all members of enterprise families and the professionals who support them.

Critical family-centric topics such as leading an enterprise family, transitions in leadership, and long- and short-term family planning will be part of our forum experience, brought to life through unique, authentic family case studies with insight into how families are shaping the world and creating global impact.

The forum will have dedicated opportunities to connect in person with other families, advisors, and FOX subject matter experts during programming and social events.

Once again, we are excited to offer the Rising Gen at the FOX Family Forum program. The first session, followed by an informal dinner, will be held the evening of October 27 with continued exclusive, in-person programming for the Rising Gen community the morning of October 28. Attendees will come away with connections, ideas, tools, and frameworks designed to ensure a positive and dynamic enterprise for the future and their place in it. Rising Gen family members can opt to stay and attend the entire Family Forum for additional learning and networking or attend just the Rising Gen portion of the program.

Join us to learn firsthand of a spousal integration and family engagement survey created by the family’s very own rising gen member, Marissa, a spouse who married into the family. Panelists will discuss the creation and design of the survey tailored to their 13+ G3s, what they learned from the responses, and how it impacted the spousal integration within their own family.

    Rising Gen Leadership Development
Recent FOX research has highlighted two key challenges future family leaders are experiencing—1) defining their future roles within the family/family office (56% of respondents), and 2) navigating family dynamics (53% of respondents). This session will help participants reflect on what they can do to prepare themselves for future leadership role, become an effective participant in the boardroom, build trust, and ensure their voice is heard.

At the end of the session, participants will:

    • Recognize the changing nature of organizations and leadership
    • Understand the four key elements of effectively operating within a complex family context:
      • Social astuteness
      • Influencing skills
      • Networking ability
      • Bringing their best, authentic self to the role
    • Consider how these themes relate to their specific family context and what they can do differently to be more successful in the short- and long- term.

    Build an Enterprise to Last
FOX founder Sara Hamilton, together with Margaret Vaughan Cox, will describe what a complex enterprise family looks like and share a new framework, detailed in their recently published book, Build an Enterprise Family to Last: Proven Strategies to Thrive Across Generations, that distinguishes the Family Journey, the Enterprise Journey, and the Personal Journey. Their methodology and milestones allow each family to explore where they are today, where they want to go in the future, and how they plan to get there. They’ll share specific examples of how families get stuck when building an enterprise and what techniques can help them better align their goals and strategies for the future. Join this session for an introduction to an in-depth seminar offered in the afternoon.

Clarifying Wealth Management Value Propositions for Effective Marketing and Growth
Wealth advisors today face a unique set of challenges as the independent wealth advisory space solidifies its role as a preferred solution for ultra-high net worth families. In this new phase of independent wealth management, UHNW clients are increasingly seeking services that go beyond traditional investment management and financial/wealth planning, leaving advisors racing to meet these broader needs. With constant industry shifts, how can wealth management firms clearly define and communicate their value proposition to their prospective clients? And how can they make sure their existing clients understand all the services and potential value in the relationship? In a time when every firm is offering “tailored, personalized solutions,” how can firms articulate their message effectively to a diverse audience and differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded market?

Join this interactive discussion where attendees will be welcomed to ask “just in time” questions to address challenges they currently face, and groups will work to develop messaging and “elevator speeches” to share.

    Key considerations include:

    • Defining your ideal client profile: The essential first step
    • Changing Face of Wealth: Women, next gen and blended families
    • Crafting a compelling elevator pitch: Developing a concise, engaging message that resonates with your audience, rather than alienating them
    • Supporting content to reinforce your value proposition: Leveraging content that highlights and demonstrates the unique value your firm delivers

    Sara Hamilton
    Sara Hamilton
    Founder and Board Chair

Sara is one of the first professionals to recognize family offices as the most sophisticated segment of wealth management, and she has been described as “the Warren Buffet of the family office industry”. When hundreds of U.S. families became centi-millionaires through leveraged buyouts in the 1980s and 1990s, private family offices were created to manage family capital and to educate wealth owners.

Sara founded the Family Office Exchange (FOX) as a peer network for family office executives in 1989. Within 10 years, she could see that families needed help with family governance and managing financial transitions, in addition to their family offices. As a result, FOX evolved into an advisor to family enterprises, a platform for sharing family wealth best practices, and an industry advocate for the importance of private enterprise in a global economy.

Today, Sara provides input to the strategic direction for FOX and supports the development of new programs and services for family enterprises and wealth advisory firms in 25 countries. Sara is the co-author of Family Legacy and Leadership: Preserving True Family Wealth in Challenging Times. She serves on the executive education faculty of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business where she is an adjunct faculty member for their Private Wealth Management and Essentials of Wealth courses in the Executive Education program. She is on the founding board for the Foundation Advancing Impact and Sustainability in Bologna and the founding board for the Private Directors Association in Chicago.
